Why people don't like to read the Bible
There can be various reasons why people don't like to read the Bible.
1. "It's too hard to understand"
2. "The Bible is nothing but a collection of folktales and myths"
3. "The Bible was written by men, so it is not of any particular value"
4. "I don't have time"
5. And on, and on, and on the reasons go.
But the truth be told, there really is only one reason why people don't like to read the Bible. Only One Reason.
The Bible Is A Mirror
People look in mirrors to get a reflection of what they look like. They use them to groom themselves to look good. They use them to admire themselves.
But the mirror found in the Bible is a mirror of a different sort. It shows us what we really look like, what our true condition really is.
The Bible shows man that in his natural state, apart from God, he is a sinner. Yes, a sinner.
Romans 3: 23* For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The "All" is inclusive of everyone. I am a sinner, and you are a sinner. All have come short of God's perfect mark.
It reflects the fact that rightness with God cannot be achieved by doing good works.
Galatians 2:16* Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
No one's works of righteousness are acceptable in order to "get right with God". My works and your works of rightness are as "filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6) in the sight of God. These filthy rags referred to in Isaiah, are the unclean menstrual rags of a woman having her monthly period.
It reflects the fact that the only way to rightness with the One True God, is through Faith in His Son, Jesus the Messiah. The above passage from Galatians, chapter 2, makes it clear that "a man is not justified (made right) by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ".
Jesus Himself said it as clearly as it could possibly be said, when he told his disciples,
I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus is the Way to God, He is the Truth of God, and He is the Life of God. No Man, no woman, no child comes to the Father, no one can come to nor approach God except through Him.
I didn't say that, He did. So if you have a problem with that setup, you need to take it up with Him. Which all men will have a chance to do, at the Great Judgment. For it is Jesus, the Word of God, who will be sitting on the Throne of Judgment.
Neither you nor I will stand before Buddha, or Mohammed, or any other religious figure on the day of judgment. Every Man will stand before Him, Jesus the Word of God, Who is God, to give an account of himself.
So why don't people like to read the Bible?
Because it shows them their true self. It shows them who they are in their natural self - a sinner.
It shows them that there is nothing they can do through good works to gain the favor of God.
It shows them that it is only through Faith in Jesus the Messiah, that they can have a true and saving relationship with the One True God.
It shows them that they are accountable to God for their actions.
But all of this is GOOD NEWS! That is what the word 'Gospel' means, is Good News. It means that God has provided a means for me and you to be right with Him. A means that doesn't require me to beat myself. A means that doesn't require me to live in guilt and condemnation. It is a means that I can live in the knowledge of God with Freedom and Liberty.
There is a debt or payment that is required for this freedom and liberty. That debt is blood. The Blood is the Life of Man.
Jesus paid that debt on the cross with his own blood, so that you and I might have an eternal relationship with God. If I believe that what Jesus did on the cross was sufficient to pay my debt as a sinner, and I trust His work, then His work of righteousness is accounted to me. He transfers His righteousness to me, thereby making me righteous in the sight of God. Not by my works, but by faith in His work.
How is that bad news? How is it a bad thing to read Good News?
READ THE BIBLE AND YOU WILL FIND GOOD NEWS FOR YOUR LIFE NOW AND FOREVER!
