 Chronology of the Passion Event
Fourteenth of Abib [Passover Day]
The Last Supper [7 pm - 1 am]
It can be stated without much contradiction, that the gathering-meal known as the Last Supper occurred in the night portion of the 14th of Abib. Whether we can say with certainty that this supper was a Passover, will be dealt with later.
A. According to Matthew 26:18; Mark 14:13-14; Luke 22:10-11, it appears that Jesus had pre-arranged with one of His disciples in Jerusalem to conduct this Passover at his home.
B. Evening had arrived, Jesus and the twelve met together for this last meal.
C. After singing the Hallel, completing the Passover, Jesus and the disciples
retired to the Mount of Olives. Mt. 26:30-35; Mk. 14:27-31; Lk. 22:14-38; Jn. 18:1-2
The Garden & Arrest [early morning hours of 14th of Abib]
Jesus spends three periods of prayer in the garden, while his friends are sleeping. Mt. 26:36-46; Mk. 14:32-42; Lk. 22:40-46
1. Judas betrays Jesus. Mt. 26:47-56; Mk. 14:43-52; Lk. 22:47-53; Jn. 18:2-12
2. Jesus was taken before Annas. Jn. 18:13-14, 19-24
3. Jesus before Caiaphas. Mt. 26:57-58; Mk. 14:53-65; Lk. 22:54-71; Jn. 18:24
Before Pilate [sunrise of 14th of Abib]
When morning had come, members of the Council led Jesus to Pilate. The charge brought against Jesus before Pilate did not have its root in Jewish law, but that he claimed to be king. This is a claim that Rome would take seriously.
It is here that the Jewish council refuses to enter the Pretorium, lest they be defiled and unable to eat the “Passover.” (Mt. 27:1-2; Mk. 15:1; Lk. 23:1; Jn. 18:28)
