 3. Mark 16:1 has them purchasing the spices after the sabbath of the burial had passed.
Mark 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
To keep this verse in its proper context, we must ask, “Which sabbath was past?” To answer this, we must go back to the last-mentioned sabbath in Mark’s narrative. The last sabbath mentioned is found in Mark 15:42. This is the sabbath which was fast approaching, as the burial team was working.
After this sabbath had past, meaning the sabbath of the 15th of Abib, the High Day (Jn. 19:31), the women bought sweet spices, so that they might anoint Jesus.
It is at this point, that Luke’s narrative picks up. In Luke 23, we read, with particular attention given to verse 56.
53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Matthew tells us when the burial team finished their work, they departed, while the women remained sitting at the gravesite. At this point, the sabbath of the 15th of Abib had begun. Luke then informs us that the women “returned, and prepared spices and ointments.” Where did they get these spices and ointments? When did they have time to purchase them? These answers are found in Mark’s narrative.
At the risk of overstating the issue, I feel compelled to do so.
• The sabbath of the 15th of Abib was commencing as the burial team was placing the body of Jesus into the tomb. [Luke 23:53-54]
• The burial team then departed the scene. [Matt. 27:60]
• The women, the two Marys with others perhaps, continued to sit at the gravesite. [Matt. 27:61]
